Past Projects
Geometric Cross-Calibration of Constellations of Orbiting Imaging Sensors
We developed new tools for the automated cross-calibrations of swarms of on-orbit imaging sensors. Work included simulation and modeling of the sensors, generation of synthetic data based on currently available satellite imagery, and development and testing of dynamical filters for data fusion and calibration.
Modular Space Telescope
We studied the feasibility of constructing giant (30+ m across) space telescopes using identical, mass-produced modules. Student researchers helped with analysis and simulation tasks, as well as visualization and animation of the concept.
Coded Aperture Ranging
Coded aperture ranging is an image ranging technique that allows for the extraction of range information from single images with minor modifications to conventional camera systems. This project involved designing and manufacturing an aperture mask and designing a set of experiments to calibrate and demonstrate the ranging technique for eventual application to in-space imaging.
Support for Space System MOOC
In collaboration with Prof. Daniel Selva we developed a MATLAB-based space systems MOOC.
CCAT-p Wall-Climbing Robot
In collaboration with the Space Science department, we are designing and manufacturing a wall-climbing robot to preform metrology on the mirrors of the CCAT-prime observatory, which will be constructed in Chile and begin operations in the early 2020s. Students are needed with mechatronics experience, 3D printing and design experience and control and estimation experience.
